The Business Area Continental Europe is headquartered in Amsterdam and covers 16 countries. For this business area we are searching for an Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager.


Overall purpose

  • Provide strategic advice and guidance on EHS policy and EHS risks to the Continental European Business Area.
  • Guide and support business- and line- management to continuously improve EHS performance
  • Develop and maintain EHS policies and procedures and ensure that all managers, supervisors and staff are trained and comply with requirements.
  • Provide inspiration and leadership to local EHS experts and establish a proactive EHS support service with a commercially focused influence throughout the Business Area.
  • Represents the Business Area in EHS Bunzl group committee(s) to report on Business area EHS programs and performance.

Key Responsibilities

Legislative and Group policy compliance

  • Ensures understanding of EHS policies and required standards by effective communication and training.
  • Manages, facilitates and reviews inspection programmes in the Business Area.
  • Carries out site visits and audits and advises line- and business management and EHS staff on the appropriate interpretation of Group EHS policies.
  • Ensures that acquired companies in the Business Area are made aware of Group EHS policies

EHS program and performance

  • Drives the introduction of standards, tools and actions in the Business Area to enhance EHS performance and awareness e.g. through specific safety programs in France.
  • Proposes EHS focus areas and ensures targets for these areas are included in the Strategic Planning process in the business area.
  • Coordinates the investigation of accidents and dangerous occurrences.
  • Actively shares best practices and learnings of accidents across the Business Area.


  • Ensures accurate and timely reporting of EHS data across the Business Area.
  • Where needed, develops EHS metrics to support and demonstrate policy compliance and continuous improvement in the Business Area.


  • Ensures compliance with Group EHS reporting procedures.
  • Prepares and communicates quarterly EHS performance summaries on various levels within the Business Area and to the Group.

In this role you report to the MD Bunzl Continental Europe.
You are based in Amsterdam with frequent visits to Continental European Businesse.

Functie eisen

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Masters’ degree in Environmental Management or related field.
  • Excellent English language skills.


  • A minimum of 10 years of EHS experience, preferably gained within an international organisation and ideally in logistics.
  • Up to date knowledge of European EHS legislation and ability to interpret and prioritise.
  • Experience of developing and implementing accident prevention and EHS training programmes.
  • Experience in developing and implementing environmental improvement programs e.g. waste prevention and carbon emission reduction.
  • Experience of coordinating EHS audits and ensuring the implementation and monitoring of recommendations.
  • Knowledge and experience of international standards: ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
